Day 5: Saturday May 17 - Indiana Dunes National Park.

Emily and Pepper camped last night. They heard a few nightly crawlers outside her tent but everything ended up ok.

The motel in the light of day is ok. It's just an update to a typical old roadside motel.

The power was out when I checked in at 6pm Friday night and finally came back on at 8am this morning.

Started the day with a hike around Mount Baldy to the beach (Lake Michigan). Mount Baldy is the park's most dramatic dune at 125 feet. It's similar to Jockey's Ridge in NC which is 100 feet. They only allow guided hikes to the top so we only got to see it from the bottom.
Don't know why this is upside down.
Our next stop was the 1933 Century of Progress Homes. These were built to showcase the future of home building. They were built for the 1933 Chicago World's Fair. They were bought by a private developer and moved by barge to here. This is the Armco Ferro house. It's made of porcelain steel panels and was intended to be mass produced. It was the only one of the five that met standards for the fair committee.
This is the Florida Tropical.

This is the Wieboldt-Rosone home which was framed in steel but clad with an experimental material called “Rostone.” This material was made of shale, limestone, and alkali and proved to not be as sturdy as originally hope

This the "House of Tomorrow." It was all glass and currently under renovation.
The final house was the Cypress House (not shown because couldn't get a good picture).

A few pictures from the beach at Lake Michigan. Never realized how big it really is.

Chicago in the background.

The next stop was lunch, BBQ Indiana style. Emily had the brisket.

The next stop was the Visitor Center where we squished a few pennies and bought a few souvenirs. We also learned about the Diana Dunes Challenge (challenge). It involved a strenuous 1 mile hike with over 275 steps over a big dune leading to Lake Michigan. We succeeded!

After a visit to the Environmental Education Information Center, Emily took a separate 2 mile hike through several dunes with flowers and other dune features to Lake Michigan.

The final trek of the day was at the Portage Lakefront and Riverwalk where we got to observe the sunset over Chicago. The lake most pretty rough while we were there with chilly water.
Supper was from Chic-Fil-a.

Pepper is tuckered out in the tent after a long day of hikes.
