Day 6: Sunday May 18 - Emily explores more hiking trails with friends and travel day.

Emily's friend and her friend are meeting Emily for some morning and mid-day hiking at Indiana Dunes. Then it's off to Coralville Lake Dam (300 miles) in Iowa for Emily to camp for one night near a Devonian fossil site. I'll be rouging it in a Sleep Inn nearby.
The 300 mile drive started with a busy drive across the southern Chicago area of Illinois, followed by many miles of rural Illinois I-80 which seemed to be a continuous construction zone. We finally reached the Mississippi and Iowa. (Note: the following pictures were taken by passenger Emily)

At our stop for supper was Iowa 80 which tours itself as the world's largest truck stop and includes a vintage truck museum.

Day 9: Wednesday- May 21 Side trip to Minnesota

After leaving Canistota, SD we made a side trip to the Pipestone National Monument in SW Minnesota. Petroglyphs A Dakota Indian making pipes and other items from Pipestone using traditional methods. Leaping Rock: Early explorers noted arrows stuck in the cracks on top of Leaping Rock. They learned from various tribes that warriors, to prove their bravery, jumped from the cliff onto the top of Leaping Rock roughly 12 feet away and jammed an arrow into one of the cracks. It was also said that occasionally, a woman might refuse the attention of a warrior until he had shown his bravery by jumping onto Leaping Rock. Traditional quarry for Pipestone. Day 2: Wednesday May 14 - Begin trip, Travel to Mammoth Cave.

Loaded car. Tied down kyaks. Traveled to Mammoth Cave. Stopped for a short while at the Clay County Historical Museum in NW TN.  They knew Jacob, of course. Arrived at Mammoth Cave for some hiking adventures and splelunking. 185 miles out of 1550 down. Spent the evening exploring a few trails. Cottage at Mammoth Cave is very nice. Two double rooms, A/C, dorm fridge. Plenty of room.  This one of the early carriages they used to take visitors to the caves. Entrance to Dixon Cave which is no longer open and home to endangered bats. Emily's bedroom with the moni- fridge Mike's bedroom. Toilet is not much bigger than an outhouse. It had an automatic light that stayed on about 15 seconds unless you kept moving.

Day 11: Friday May 23 Home Sweet Home!
